Overcoming Panic Attacks

By Harry Constantine

Anyone who has had a panic attack knows simply how big a problem they are. They will stop you enjoying life and in some cases keep you housebound and lonely.

How you overcome your panic attacks could be a massive issue, as once you can overcome them you'll be able to get on with your life again. Many people who have regular panic attacks solely want to be in a position to get on with their lives.

Here are some easy techniques which will facilitate you to overcome panic attacks and stop them from being so frequent.

Whenever you enter a state of panic, your breathing naturally becomes shallow and rapid. Once you are relaxed focus on breathing deeply and evenly from your stomach. You wish this sort of breathing to become natural to you thus you are doing it most of the time.

When you're feeling a panic attack starting up you need to instantly turn your attention to your breathing and start breathing in this deep and regular manner. You could wish to stop what ever you are doing and sit down to target making your breathing regular again. This will generally be enough to prevent a panic attack.

As this becomes second nature to you, you will automatically breath in this relaxed manner when a panic attack starts. Initially you will wish to have a cue to remind you to breath in this manner, perhaps write it on your hand or tell the individuals around you to remind you.

Practising relaxation or self hypnosis techniques can also help you cope with panic attacks. You can teach yourself self hypnosis or attend yoga or meditation classes.

The feeling of being out of control and not ready to cope often contributes to a panic attack. All of these induce stress within the body and stop rational thought. Through these relaxation techniques you'll be able to let go of the strain and prevent the panic attack from taking over.

If you can learn the triggers for your panic attacks then you can start to avoid them. There are always going to be triggers you can't avoid so you would like to change how you are feeling regarding them. Visualizing yourself being calm and relaxed before you enter the situation could be a nice technique for this. Keep that relaxed feeling as you go through the situation in your mind.

Your sub-conscious mind doesn't recognize the difference between reality and imagination (just imagine something painful and you'll understand this is often true) so you will modify your feelings about these situations

From this visualization you'll find that situations that made you panic now only make you feel relaxed. This might be a touch peculiar initially, but you'll prefer it.

You will overcome panic attacks using the above techniques. Be gentle on yourself and be patient and you will see a big distinction in your levels of panic attacks.
